Skin Cleansing

Today I’m writing about a small topic called cleansing, cleansing your face that is! Many clients who come in to see me for the first time tell me that they cleanse their skin in the shower with the same hot water they’re using for the rest of their body. Well, at very least the face is getting cleansed, however not without jeopardizing the skin in the long run. Let me tell you why this is a bad idea.

When it comes to cleaning the face temperature matters. Hot water can strip our facial skin of its natural barrier leaving skin feeling dry, depleted and vulnerable to the elements. Another problem is extra hot water enlarges capillaries and blood vessels in our dermal layer. Some of these little capillaries may even burst. This can ultimately cause irreversible redness in the skin and no one wants that. Lastly, a higher water temperature can cause unnecessary sensitivity in our skin.

A simple ritual of cleansing your skin over the bathroom sink with cold to tepid water is the best way to care for your face. Apply preferred cleanser with fingers, massage cleanser into skin, rinse with cold to tepid water over the bathroom sink, pat dry with towel. Treat your skin with tender loving care.

Never use hot or super warm water on the face! This may be a couple of extra steps, but your face will thank you.
